One of few functioning hospitals that remains in Syria's northern city of Aleppo fell victim to a government airstrike early Thursday, killing 15 and leaving almost 40 missing.

According to anti-government activists, warplanes attacked the Damascus suburb targeting rebels they see as a threat to President Bashar al-Assad's control of the capital.

Once privately owned by a Syrian businessman loyal to the president, the hospital functioned as a field clinic in the days leading up to the attack.  Volunteer doctors, nurses and aides took control of the hospital, giving medical care to both civilians and rebels.

The facility took at least six direct hits with damages mostly to the upper stories in recent months

The Wall Street Journal reported the airstrike killed at least 11 fighters, a doctor, a young girl and two children on the street.

Activist posted videos online, showing the hospital's destroyed facade and scattered rubble.
