City Shortlist: October 12-19

Arts and Entertainment Editors |
October 12, 2012 | 10:08 p.m. PDT

City Shortlist is a weekly roundup of the city's best events handpicked by NT staffers.

Hit up a pop-up club for some great new music, enjoy Burning Man in Downtown LA for some outdoors fun and experience Hello Kitty in a gallery setting this week.

Low End Theory Anniversary | Oct. 17 | 10 p.m. | The Airliner

Every Wednesday night, The Airliner, an unassuming bar in Lincoln Heights, turns into the funkiest dance party on the east side of town. Now it its sixth year, Low End has all the makings of a new legendary venue in town with everyone from Radiohead’s Thom Yorke to Erykah Badu having walked through its doors. Celebrate the pop-up club in all its glory this week by grooving the night away to resident DJs Daddy Kev, Gaslamp Killer, D-Styles and more. (Low End Theory)

10th Annual LA Decompression Art & Music Fest | Oct. 13-14 | 1 pm-dawn | LA State Historical Park

This event brings the spirit of Burning Man to Downtown with an 18-hour festival of live music, art, performances, puppets, marching bands, fire...you name it. Stay up and watch the sunrise with the family or your beloved furry friends, something unusual for us city-dwelling folks (we like to sleep in on weekends). The trick is to go early: tickets are $20 before 7 pm and get more expensive as the festivities continue. No admission after 2 am. (LA Decom)

Hello Kitty, Hello Art! | Oct. 14 | 1-6 p.m. | Known Gallery

One of the most iconic figures in contemporary art is popping up in WeHo's Known Gallery for a one-day gallery event. Hello Kitty's getting the print treatment in a new pop art book, and so Sanrio is celebrating with an opening day party/art show. The gallery will be decked out in a solo show by artist POSE, and will also feature works by artists like RISK, Niagara, and Shepard Fairey. Beats will be provided by DJs The Pastries, and specialty products and prints will be available for sale, as well as the art book in question. (Known Gallery)
