A law passed last year in the Texas Legislature barred Planned Parenthood from receiving state funds because of connections to abortion providers.  The state was sued by eight clinics that do not provide abortions, according to the Associated Press.

The Associated Press reported:

"The court is particularly influenced by the potential for immediate loss of access to necessary medical services by several thousand Texas women," [U.S. District Judge Lee] Yeakel wrote in his ruling. "The record before the court at this juncture reflects uncertainty as to the continued viability of the Texas Women's Health Program."

Texas officials have said that if the state is forced to include Planned Parenthood, they will likely shut down the program that serves basic health care and contraception to 130,000 poor women.

The decision by Texas officials has cost Texas federal funding, though Gov. Rick Perry has stated that they will make up for the shortfall, according to the AP.

Yeakel’s decision to impose an injunction against enforcing the Texas law is temporary, and will be decided later at trial.
