Former presidential candidate Herman Cain endorsed onetime rival Newt Gingrich at a campaign event in West Palm Beach, Fla. on Saturday.

“Speaker Gingrich is a patriot,” Cain told The Daily Beast. “Speaker Gingrich is not afraid of bold ideas. And I also know Speaker Gingrich is running for president and going through this sausage-grinder—I know what this sausage-grinder is all about. I know he is going through this sausage-grinder because he cares about the future of America.”

The endorsement came three days before the Florida primary. In the primary, the winner will receive more delegates than all the previous primaries combined.

Cain endorsement may help Gingrich “at a moment when his Florida campaign is working to regain traction,” according to Reuters. Cain had a decent-sized following in Florida before he dropped out.

Cain’s endorsement will gain Gingrich airtime, but it is unclear how many of his followers will now follow Gingrich after the way Cain’s candidacy ended.

Gingrich has also received endorsements from Rick Perry and Fred Thompson.
