Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the inspirational congresswoman who is still recovering from a gun shot wound she sustained earlier this year to the brain, served up a Thanksgiving meal to troops in her home state.

According to CBS News, Giffords arrived at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson midday Thursday. Wearing an apron with the name "Gabby" sewn across, Giffords helped serve meals to current and retired service members.

Giffords was accompanied by her husband, former astronaut and retired Navy Captain Mark Kelly.

Fox News reported that more than 400 people were expected to attend the traditional Thanksgiving meal at the air base.

"It's always special to have a member of Congress come and spend time with the troops and show support," said Brig Gen Jon Norman, acting commander of the 12th Air Forces, Southern. "But after everything that she's been through, it's a little bit more special."

Some signs of Gifford's injuries still remain. CBS News reported that: "Giffords used only her left hand as she served, a sign that physical damage remains from the injuries she suffered when she was shot in January." 

According to the Tucson-Sentinel, Giffords flew from Houston to Tucson on Tuesday night to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with her family. The congresswoman is still undergoing intensive rehabilitation in Houston at TIRR Memorial Hermann. 

The visit marks the third time Giffords has returned to Tucson following the shooting on January 8 of this year. Giffords was also in Tucson for Father's Day and Labor Day weekend.
