Al Jazeera shows video of deposed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's dead body

A video of what appears to be Gaddafi's bloody body laying on the ground after he was captured and shot, being kicked by rebels, has been obtained and played by Al Jazeera.

"We confirm that all the evils, plus Gaddafi, have vanished from this beloved country," said NTC Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril, according to Reuters. "It's time to start a new Libya, a united Libya."

There are conflicting reports about how Gaddafi's capture and death came about, with NATO confirming an air strike near Sirte against pro-Gaddafi forces. Preliminary reports seem to indicate that Gaddafi's convoy was halted by the airstrike and he was later captured and killed by rebels.

France's defense minister, Gerard Longuet, said a French fighter jet fired on the ousted leader's convoy, according to The Associated Press. Longuet said the French strike stopped the convoy of approximately 80 vehicles but didn't destroy it. Fighters on the ground then intercepted Gaddafi's vehicle.

Another report claims Gaddafi was found hiding in a concrete pipe, where graffiti in Arabic now reads: "This is the place of Gaddafi, the rat. God is the greatest," according to photos posted on Foreign Policy.  A golden gun was recovered at the scene, believed to belong to Gaddafi.

A spokesman for a Tripoli military councilmember told CNN that one of Gaddafi's sons, Mutassim, and Gaddafi's chief of intelligence, Abdullah al-Senussi, were also killed.

Gaddafi was in power for more than 40 years after a coup in 1969.  After the fall of Tunisian dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in January and Egypt's Hosni Mubarak in February, he is the third North African dictator to fall in the wake of the Arab Spring.

Libya's ambassador to the United Kingdom said the body of the 69-year-old former dictator is in Misrata, Libya, CNN reported.

A video posted to Reuters that appears to be shortly thereafter shows rebels celebrating a dead Gaddafi.
