The L.A. Kings are ditching their old duds and opening up the 2011-2012 season with a new look.

The Kings announced Aug. 30 that they will no longer be sporting purple as part of their color scheme and will stick to black, white and silver.

The new sweaters will be reminiscent of the Gretzky era, or the “Silver and Black era” in Kings history—featuring the alternate uniform logo with “LA” featured prominently on the front.

The purple jerseys haven’t been completely abandoned. They will still be worn as alternate jerseys.

Team President Luc Robitaille said the very Raiders-esque shift in colors is in response to fan demands.

“There was an overwhelming sentiment from our fans and from our players that has led us to this change,” Robitaille said. “Our fans really like the late 1980s and early 1990s era Kings uniforms which are very similar to this uniform."

It’s no wonder the Kings would want to go back to the “Silver and Black era”— a happier time. Wayne Gretzky led the Kings in scoring in his first season (1988-1989) in L.A. with 168 points on 54 goals and 114 assists. He also won his ninth Hart Trophy as the league MVP. Gretzky went on to lead the league in scoring the following year and led the Kings to their only regular-season division title in franchise history in 1991.

With Gretzky and Robitaille at the helm, the Kings battled to the Stanley Cup finals in 1993 where they dropped the series to the Montreal Canadiens in five games.

The Kings will open up their season at home in their new sweaters on Oct. 7 against the New York Rangers.
