David Plouffe, President Barack Obama's 2008 campaign manager, told reporters Thursday that Democrats should expect Republicans to take control of Congress in November's elections.

Failing to do so, he said, would be an embarrassment for the Republican Party.

"By their definition, success is winning back the House, winning back the Senate and winning every major governor's race," he said. "When you've got winds this strong in your favor, that's the kind of election you need to have - or it should be considered a colossal failure."

Though Plouffe said Republicans have several advantages going into November, he said things aren't as bad as they seem for the Democrats.

He said he expects Democrats to "show progress gradually."

"We're just trying to do as well as we can," he said.

Plouffe noted the effect loud voices of the Tea Party movement have had on Democratic voters citing recent polls showing increased inclination to vote.

It's extreme Tea Partiers like Christine O'Donnell who wiil ultimately help the Democratic cause, he said.

"It's had an effect," he said. "It's one of the reasons Democrats are saying they are more likely to vote."

He also managed to fit in a Sarah Palin dig, adding that as far as a 2012 presidential run goes, "[S]omething tells me we won’t get that lucky.”
