California Keeps It Fresh With Produce

Next time you eat a colorful salad for lunch, thank the great state of California.

While morale has been low for famers due to a lingering warm winter, California comes out on top of the nation for farming produce.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture showed in its latest report that the state produces nearly half of all fruits, nuts and vegetables grown in the entire United States. California also dominates the market in 66 food crops, including almonds, artichokes, dates, figs, raisins, kiwifruit among many others. 

The state earned approximately $45 billion in 2012. The biggest contributors were milk, grapes, almonds, strawberries and walnuts.
