Ricky Gervais hosts the Golden Globes Sunday night.

This year marks the third knock down hosting round for the British comedian inciting backlash within the Hollywood community.

With such a notorious hosting reputation under his belt, why does the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) sign up for such relentless ridicule?

Gervais is known for his satirical commentary, bringing the Hollywood elite to their knees groveling for mercy on live television no less.  During last year’s show, Robert Downey Jr. took a volley to the host’s diatribe during his presenter’s segment after Gervais made a jab at his past criminal history.

There will be plenty of cannon fodder for the notorious MC to sling with stars like Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Madonna, Reese Witherspoon, and a slew of other stars including the return of Downey Jr.  Gervais is sure to bring his A-game of hosting for Hollywood’s A-list crowd in attendance.

For the viewer, it is a sigh of relief to watch a host without any restrain against negative commentary against the overwrought awards show hosted by the notoriously Ego-centric HFPA.

The Golden Globes is a marketing vehicle arranged by the press cadre of 90 journalist representing 55 countries who otherwise are known for little else than the award show itself.

Essentially, the awards show acts as a marketing kit to add more oomph to box office receipts making Gervais the perfect choice because he’s not afraid to say what others are already saying, tweeting, and anonymously commentating on under hushed breath and web pseudonyms.

Prompting many to tune in and see the uncensored host’s slanderous running commentary on the Hollywood elite.

In today’s celebrity obsessed culture it makes for excellent television fodder and a night when the heckling from the typical groundlings is supported by the MC himself.  The HFPA with its self-induced ego stroking deserves a host like Gervais.  The awards show’s ability to make fun of its self-delusional prowess is perhaps their one saving grace.

In a world inundated with hardships, throwing an outlandish extravagant Gala in honor of how fabulous you are yearns for a balance of truth.  Rick Gervais is the only one who seems to have the where with all to tell the Emperor in truth, he isn’t wearing any clothes, rather than ask, “What dress are you wearing?”
