Judd Apatow’s interviews with actors and fellow comedians are finally all in one place. His book “Sick in the Head” features “conversations about life and comedy,” which include interviews about comedy vs. beauty (attractiveness of a comedian or the attractiveness of the comedy). It also includes content about the different forms of comedy today: is it all too much? What’s good out there, and what’s bad? There’s a variety of comedy today than there was years ago, but more isn’t necessarily better. The interviews are never boring, and make reading nearly 500 pages a breeze.

To help fans join the conversation, here are ten memorable quotes collected from several interviews Apatow was kind enough to share:

“Because every audience is completely different—a completely different group of people with a completely different personality.” - Jerry Seinfeld on preparing to make a crowd laugh

“…but I want to get under people’s skin and provoke in addition to having a hopeful message.” -Judd Apatow to Adam Sandler

“I’m speaking to the women and trying to keep the guys interested enough that they will still want to come to the shows.” -Amy Schumer about stand-up comedy

“I try never to brag but I’m probably the only person who has been on ’60 Minutes’ twice and isn’t dead.” -Chris Rock on being a successful comedian

“ …I’ve been so fortunate to work with a lot of talented people and we’ve done a lot of things I am proud of, but at the end of the day, ‘Freaks and Geeks’ was our ‘Revolver.’” -Judd Apatow on the cancelation and success of “Freaks and Geeks”

“If life only has the meaning you bring to it, we have the opportunity to bring rich meaning to our lives by the service we do for others.” -Harold Ramis on finding peace within oneself

“Working with an audience is like being an animal trainer. If you go in the ring and you’re a little bit nervous and your hand’s shaking, the animals sense it and they rip you apart.” -Jay Leno on stand-up comedy

“…I just feel dumb and want to process my thoughts through humor. Every once in a while, it’s a way to make things less painful.” -Judd Apatow to Lena Dunham about being taken seriously as a comedian

“I had little birds and and hearts floating round my head and she didn’t even notice.” -Judd Apatow about wife Leslie Mann while filming “The Cable Guy”

“As I’ve gotten older I really believe that life is about finding ways to connect to other people…” -Judd Apatow to Marc Maron about joy.
