The season two finale of “Penny Dreadful” has fans wanting more with the show’s usual blood and suspense, but we’ll need to wait until next year.

The finale wasn’t as juicy as the episode before it, but that was expected. Director/writer John Logan told Entertainment Weekly, “We actually resolve the plot 20 minutes into it, and then the rest of the story is about resolving those characters as they clash against one another and crumble and rebuild themselves.”

The final episode picks up where the previous one left off, rather than having a new story unfold. Vanessa (Eva Green) is speaking to the voodoo doll, which is the devil convincing her to join the dark side. Meanwhile, Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) and Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) are still trapped in a room, facing their guilty pasts. Ethan (Josh Hartnett) is in is werewolf state. Here (spoiler alert), the show loses one of its characters, Sembene (Danny Sapani).

Back in the “master’s” downstairs lair, Vanessa is being bribed to join the dark forces. The devil offers her a life of normalcy by showing her life with Ethan married and happy with children. After refusing and dealing with the bad forces, the usual group leaves to head back to Sir Malcolm’s home.

Dr. Frankenstein returns to his home to find Lily (Billie Piper), his latest creation, gone. He confronts her at Dorian Gray’s (Reeve Carney) home. Dissatisfied with what he sees, he shoots both of them, only to learn that they are immortal. He returns to his home in sadness that Lily has chosen Dorian and a different life, and injects himself with some type of poison.

Now that Vanessa knows about Ethan’s dark secret, he asks for her forgiveness in spite of his uncontrollable behavior that keeps them from being together. Later, he turns himself in, admitting to all the bloody murders that went on throughout the season. Instead of being hung, he is extradited.

Frankenstein’s monster, Creature (Rory Kinnear) and Vanessa have a moment, where he reveals that he will travel to choose a life of solitude and invites her to join him. Knowing what dangers she can bring, she kindly refuses and gives her farewell.

The season ends with Vanessa staying in Malcolm’s home and everyone else on a ship to follow their fate. With the plot’s broken family, Logan said, “Next season, some of them are alone, and they don’t have their friends to turn to — they don’t have that support.”

Despite the split characters, we expect to see a new literary character added to this Victorian horror story (to replace Frankenstein as it seems Dorian Gray will make it to the next round). So please, John Logan: can we see Jekyll and Hyde?
