Get Ready For Record Store Day: 5 Can't-Miss New Vinyls

Every year since 2007, the third Saturday of April has held host to Record Store Day, a worldwide event celebrating independent record stores and the beloved vinyl format they continue to support in this era of digital downloads and the Pirate Bay. While each record store celebrates in their own way, they all have for sale vinyl albums released exclusively for Record Store Day: the past eight years have featured releases by giants of music like Lady Gaga, Coldplay, Wilco and Death Cab For Cutie, as well as indie standbys like Neko Case and Best Coast.

Record stores across the country will be celebrating this special day on April 18th, so here’s a preview of six of this year’s best offerings.

Courtney Barnett - “Kim’s Caravan”

Crowned 2015’s indie rock darling with her debut LP “Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit,” Australian singer-songwriter Barnett’s witty lyricism and heartfelt melodies are celebrated with a 12” vinyl release of her rambling, remarkable song “Kim’s Caravan,” with an exclusive B-side cover of “Close Watch” by The Velvet Underground’s John Cale.

The White Stripes - “Get Behind Me Satan”

Unbelievably enough, The White Stripes’ seminal album “Get Behind Me Satan” has never received a commercial vinyl release— until now. This double-LP set (with one white disc and one red disc, natch) features an exclusive track sequence, brand new artwork and a lenticular-printed jacket.

Father John Misty - “I Love You, Honeybear”

This RSD-exclusive release features a new acoustic version of the title track to Josh Tillman’s latest critically acclaimed album, as well as a B-side of a brand new song entitled “Never Been A Woman.” In a form terrifically true to Tillman’s predilection for irony and visual exuberance, the single’s been pressed on a heart-shaped cherry-red 7” vinyl. It’s limited to under 6,000 copies, so better snag yours quickly!

Makthaverskan - “Witness”

Though already well-known in their native Sweden, young indie-punk band Makthaverskan made a remarkable splash at SXSW 2015, playing their first American shows to great acclaim in support of their second album, "II," released last year. Get an introduction to their driving rhythms and ambient, sun-soaked vocals with this limited-release single, featuring an alternate, laid-back version of their song “No Mercy” as a B-side.

The Pizza Underground - “PU Demos”

Did you know Macaulay Culkin has a band that exclusively sings pizza-themed parodies of Velvet Underground songs? Well, you do now, just in time to pick up their first-ever vinyl release on Record Store Day. Previously released on cassette, this 7” has nine demos (made up of two continuous live jam sessions) that sport titles like “Cheese Days” and “All The Pizza Parties.” Yeah.

Find a list of participating stores here. There are dozens in the L.A. area, so make your way over to one next Saturday and pick up some new music!
