The Trojans (12-0) finished off their series sweep of the Fordham Rams (1-8) with a 10-1 victory Sunday afternoon. After two tight games, USC continued their undefeated run behind a remarkable performance by freshman pitcher Mitch Hart and a 5-RBI effort from second baseman Dante Flores.

In seven innings, Hart allowed only one run on two hits and had five strikeouts to earn his second win of his career. In his last appearance against Oakland, Hart struggled to put batters away when he got ahead in the count. Sunday's game was a total change in pace, as Hart placed his off-speed pitches better and had three 1-2-3 innings.

"I thought that he was much better in the strike zone, he wasn’t getting deep in the count and he was able to make them have to hit his pitch," said USC head coach Dan Hubbs. "I think that was the biggest difference between last week and this week. You know, he was at 90-something pitches in six innings and today he was at 94 through seven and he had plenty in the tank to go eight.”

The Trojans got off to an early 2-0 lead against Fordham’s starter Kirk Haynes Jr. in the bottom of the first. Catcher Jeremy Martinez started things with an RBI single, and a sacrifice fly from Flores scored left fielder Garrett Stubbs.

Hart kept the Rams hitless until the third inning, but he still only faced the minimum amount of batters thanks to a savvy pickoff of Fordham’s Ian Edmiston by Hart.

USC had their biggest offensive output in the bottom of the fourth. After consecutive RBI's from first baseman Joe Corrigan, in his first season start, and shortstop Reggie Southall, center fielder Timmy Robinson came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. In clutch fashion, Robinson singled to left and scored two. Flores topped that with a 3-run home run to right-center, his first of the season, increasing the lead to 9-0. The Trojans left 11 men on base during Saturday’s game, however they were much more consistent with runners in scoring position Sunday.

“We’re trying to be the same person whether guys are in scoring position or not and really trying to get them to not do so much in the spot,” Hubbs noted, “If they let the game come to them, which they did for the most part today, then I think we’ll be in good shape.”

Fordham’s right fielder Mark Donadio earned the Rams their only run of the day with an RBI single to left field in the sixth, but an unbelievable diving grab by Southall prevented any further damage.

Sophomore pitcher Andrew Wright made his season debut in the ninth to close out the game, with a final score of 10-1. The Trojans racked up 12 hits, with all but one starter having at least one hit, testifying to their balance as a team.

The Trojans have put together a nice string of wins, but the upcoming Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic next weekend with games against ranked Vanderbilt, TCU and UCLA will show how good this Trojans team really is. As they move forward, Hubbs commented on the areas they need to improve on for the tournament. “When we have guys on base we’ve got to be able to cash them in,” he said. “We need to execute a little bit better on the mound, especially out of the bullpen.”

USC looks to continue their undefeated year as they head to UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday.
