Englander Runs Unopposed

The only candidate running in the 12th District race is incumbent Councilman Mitchell Englander.

Englander, 44, was elected to his first term as councilman for the 12th District in 2011.  In the crowded race that year, he won with a 58 percent majority.

The councilman represents the neighborhoods of Granada Hills, Northridge, Porter Ranch, Chatsworth, North Hills, Reseda, Sherwood Forest and West Hills.

Since assuming his role as councilman, Englander has been elected President Pro Tempore of the City Council in 2013, essentially acting as a vice president to City Council President Herb Wesson. Englander has also taken leadership positions on the Public Safety and Finance committees, and is a member of the Planning and Land Use Management Committee.

The most important issues for Englander, a LAPD Reserve Police Officer since 2006, are protecting the community, repairing streets and sidewalks, eliminating business taxes, reforming the Department of Water and Power, creating local jobs, ensuring government transparency and promoting civic engagement.

Districts four and 12 are statistically similar according to U.S. Census data compiled by the L.A. Times. Both report above-average income and below-average crime rates compared with L.A. County averages.

In an interesting City Council Election dynamic, however, each District 4 candidate competes against 13 others, hoping to cross the finish line as Englander runs alone in a race he is almost sure to win.
