UEFA Champions League: 3 Takeaways From This Week's Action
Finally! Champions League is back in action! The first games of the Round of 16 began Tuesday, and quite frankly, the wait has been too long. The last time matches were played, Thomas Edison was busy inventing the light bulb.
Tuesday and Wednesdays matches included PSG vs Chelsea, Shakhtar Donetsk vs Bayern Munich, Basel vs Porto and Real Madrid vs Schalke 04.
With the exception of the PSG vs Chelsea game, the rest were, to say the least, unmemorable. Here’s what we can take away from the first batch of games in the round of 16.
1) Bayern Munich struggled in Ukraine.
This game was a snore fest from the get-go. The game ended in a 0-0 draw. Although Bayern Munich dominated possession as shown by their 64% time on the ball, they failed to finish chances and did not do a good job within the opponent’s 18-yard box. Too often shots went wide, and service from Ribery and Robben was not up to their world class level.
The only eventful thing that transpired was Xabi Alonzo’s red card in the 59th minute, which could have repercussions going in to the second leg. After beating Hamburg 8-0 in league, one would think they’d have made quick use of Shaktar.

2) Chelsea has the advantage over PSG going into the second leg.
The match between the reigning French champs and current English Premier League leaders has been a highly anticipated matchup and ended in a thrilling 1-1 draw. The game had some entertaining aspects to it and PSG saw many of their chances go to waste. Branislav Ivanovic converted a goal for Chelsea in the first half, when he headed the ball past PSG keeper Salvatore Sirigu. PSG forward Edinson Cavani received a cross from the left and headed the ball into the net, which tied the game. PSG had more chances than Chelsea did and really needed to convert them in order to avoid a difficult situation going in to the second leg at the Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea drawing in Paris can be considered a win for the Blues. Chelsea head into the second leg at home with an away goal in hand, and usually play their best when they are home.
3) Real Madrid could become back-to-back Champions League champions.
Everyone knows Schalke stood no chance against the Spanish powerhouse. In case people forgot, there is a reason why they are one the best teams in the world, winning 2-0 over the German side. Madrid possessed the ball for 61 percent of the game and played with continuity and pace. The game was never really a contest from the start, and often Schalke found themselves unable to provide adequate pressure on the ball.
Holes were consistently found by Madrid, and even when Schalke put their entire team in front of the ball, it wasn’t enough.
Cristiano Ronaldo ended his three-game goal drought, when he used his athleticism to sky to the top of an arching cross and put it away easily with his head, giving Madrid a 1-0 lead. Later in the game, Marcelo scored a laser of a shot that the goalie could do nothing about as he watched it go into the top right corner.
The scary thing about this game is that it was not Real Madrid’s best, not by a long shot. Although they played well, they have the capacity to play even better. Look out! If Real Madrid catches fire, they are going to beat everyone.
