Some #AdviceForYoungJournalists Based On The Legacies Of David Carr, Ned Colt And Bob Simon
The week of February 9, 2015 saw the passing of three great American journalists within the span of hours. During the same period of time, #AdviceForYoungJournalists trended on Twitter with the goal of providing aspiring storytellers with tips on everything from objectivity to maintaining their humanity.
Ned Colt, David Carr and Bob Simon served as examples of seekers of “a practical and functional form of truth” and, through both their work and lives, provided young journalists with advice on how to navigate the terrains of journalism.

Resilience Is Key
Although Carr’s struggles with drug addiction were well known, he did not allow his condition to overshadow his career as a journalist with The New York Times. Actor Tom Arnold does admit to the Washington Post that his friend David led a “life torn between the dueling forces of ambition and addiction.” As a young journalist, it is important to know what your vices are but never let them define you.
Tell The Truth However You Can
While at NBC News, Colt covered international issues ranging from the Indian Ocean tsunami to the war against terror. More recently, however, the former foreign correspondent worked with the International Rescue Committee and the United Nations office for refugees. Even without being on an international platform, Colt informed audiences about the plight of often-silenced communities.
It's About More Than Just Awards
Very few can parallel the career of Bob Simon. As the recipient of over 25 Emmy awards and countless other accolades, this “reporter’s reporter” told stories that mattered and that people cared about. Most impressive about his multi-decade career was Simon’s inability to rest on his laurels. His most recent 60 Minutes interview is available here.
Through these three men, young journalists can learn a lot and have their legacies live on.
