A Metrolink commuter train headed for Los Angeles derailed just before 6 a.m. Tuesday near Oxnard, California. This story is developing, but here’s what we know so far:

28 of the 51 passengers assessed for injury were taken to the hospital, four of them with critical injuries. No fatalities have been reported.

The train derailed when it hit a truck that was stopped on the tracks at a marked train crossing.

The truck was burned and destroyed, but the driver fled the scene on foot. He has since been found by Oxnard police, who have begun questioning him.

All four passenger cars and the locomotive car went off the track; the three front passenger cars tipped over on their sides.

Three of the four passenger cars were newer and equipped with “collision energy management technology.” This is designed to prevent train cars from crumpling by distributing the impact outward rather than inward.

The crash has caused some cancellations and delays. Metrolink advised rail commuters to use alternate transportation today.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Railroad Administration are sending investigators to the scene.

Check back throughout the day for more information as this story develops.
