You may have found yourself at your computer writing a paper when all of a sudden the word check tells you that you incorrectly spelled a word that you committed to memory throughout your primary schooling.

Millions of people found themselves in that very same "dilemma", according to the "Dilemna or Dilemma" website. To try to to save the little bit of dignity you have left, you probably conducted a google search that turned up no trace of any other spelling of the word and even suggests that you meant to type "dilemma".

Then all of a sudden you realized that the time you laughed and proudly stuck your nose in the air when you saw the billboard of the movie, The Dilemma, the joke was on you.

Your last resort was probably turning to Webster's Dictionary, the one thing left that the internet can't change, and you frantically turned to discover there is also no mention of any other spelling.

"How could something like this happen?" you asked yourself.

A website dedicated to the "dilemma" entertains several different explanations:

A textbook mistake:

This would likely explain how the spelling became so widespread, but is it likely the spelling be missed by the teacher and all of the students even with a dictionary nearby?

A mistake in academia:

Some language experts believe that teachers may have misread the second "m" in "dilemma" as an "n", but that doesn't explain why some students were intentionally taught to include the n.

An alternate universe:

More unlikely, some theorists suggest we are living in a new universe and the people who spell "dilemma" just crossed over.

While these explanations may be a little far-fetched, we may begin to see fewer people in this dilemna with the prevalence of spell check automators that we always assume are correct. This ngram shows how the use of the spelling "dilemma" declined with the increase of the automators.

For all those who thought they were alone in their "dilemna", you at least know now that Big Brother hasn't quite yet figured out how to control memories.
