Mentally Ill Texan Man Scheduled For Execution
Texan man Scott Panetti is a schizophrenic and has suffered from mental illness for more than three decades, first displaying signs in his teenage years. He is to be executed on December 3, 2014, two weeks earlier than scheduled. His attorneys found out via newspaper; the state provided them no notice of the rescheduling.
Panetti was clearly incoherent during his trial, and showed up in a cowboy costume and purple bandana. He even fell asleep during part of it.

Panetti's psychotic disorder and other mental illness symptoms resulted in him being hospitalized fifteen different times throughout his life. In 1992, he "went off his medication, shaved his head, and dressed in camouflage fatigues. He went to his in-laws house and murdered his mother and father-in-law in front of his wife and daughter," according to The Atlantic.
While describing the shooting, the mentally ill individual claimed to have assumed the personality of a character "Sarge" and recounted the event in third person. Despite this, Panetti was convicted of murder and subsequently death.
This upcoming execution raises questions about the efficacy and humanity of the death penalty.
