On Friday, 30-year old Yang Teng won a civil suit against a clinic in Chongqing that subjected him to hypnotism and electric shocks as a way to cure him of his homosexuality.

Yang says that he was asked to partake in the therapy by his parents, who found the clinic online after their son came out to them as gay last year. He was presented with a 30-session treatment plan that would cost $5,000 in total.

The declassification of homosexuality as a disease in China in 2001 paved the way for Yang’s victory.
