A 22-year-old United States Army veteran was fatally shot early Sunday morning while attending a party with friends.

Francisco Garcia, who had recently returned from serving in Afghanistan, attended a party Saturday evening at his girlfriend's home in Sylmar, Los Angeles.

Around 2 a.m. Sunday morning, those at the party decided to move to a new location near Sylmar High School. While crossing the street, two cars pulled up and an occupant began shooting at Garcia.

According to authorities, Garcia was shot and died at the scene. The investigation is currently ongoing and the motive of the shooter is yet to be determined.

Detectives believe that the occupants of the cars had not been at the party, but that a dispute between Garcia and the shooter had originated from a previous encounter.

Loved ones gathered Sunday morning around a memorial filled with flowers and candles near Sylmar High School.
