Commissioner Bill Bratton of the New York Police department announced Friday that an NYPD officer shot and killed an unarmed man in a dark stairwell of a Brooklyn housing project. The officer may have accidentally discharged his weapon.

The victim has been identified as Akai Gurley, 28. He was shot once in the chest and died at roughly 10:00 pm Eastern Standard Time on Thursday.

In the press conference, Bratton referred to the incident as a "very unfortunate tragedy."

Preliminary investigations have determined that Gurley was "a total innocent."
