Governor Nixon's declaration of state of emergency was in advance of the anticipated grand jury decision concerning the death of Michael Brown at the hands of police officer Darren Wilson.

According to Nixon, the activated National Guard will assist state and local police authority in the event that unrest breaks out as the grand jury decisions are announced.
