Scary Soccer Stars: The Halloween Starting XI

Athletes come in and all shapes and sizes. They also come in all kinds of looks. For every dDvid Beckham or Chandler Parsons, there is a questionable looking dude, whose looks you forget about because he's really good at dunking a basketball or scoring goals.

This Halloween there's only one true way to celebrate all the goofy costumes you'll see in your neighrborhood or on your local Greek row. That would be to pick a starting lineup of eleven elite soccer players who remind us of our favorite monsters and cartoon characters. Here are two basic rules for being a qualifying player: must play in a top European league and must look, well, like a Halloween costume.

Goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois - Chelsea's 22-year old stud of a goalkeeper will be between the posts for the Haunted All-Stars. One of the classier looking guys on the list, the towering keeper with his jet black hair is very reminiscent of Count Dracula. Give Courtois some fangs and a cape and he'd abandon soccer for Hollywood, becoming the modern day vampire.

Right Back: Bacary Sagna - Bacary Sagna left Arsenal for Man City over the summer but kept his hair the same. That's right, Sagna's Medusa-inspired head will be all the rave at the Etihad. One day in training rumors have it Joe Hart was frozen between the posts from looking into Sagna's eyes. This Halloween, if you see anyone who looks remotely like Medusa, please just avoid them and don't do what Hercules did.

Central Defenders: David Luiz and Phil Jones - Manchester United's Phil Jones brings the feel of the Muppets to our Hallow-team in the form of Beaker. While he mostly resembles the creeching member of the muppets, Jones loves to make funny faces as opponents try to score. Then there's David Luiz who can be compared to both a clown and my personal favorite, Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons.

Left Back: Dirk Kuyt - Playing in Turkey after many years at Liverpool, Dirk Kuyt got switched around to left back after he showed he could play there in the World Cup for Holland. Now Kuyt is very much a troll-meets-elf hybrid creature (hobbit?) with messy nappy hair. You should NOT dress like this for Halloween unless your goal is to scare people. Kuyt would not confirm whether or not he is in fact a hobbit living in the Shire.

Central Midfielders: Marek Hamsik and Ronaldinho - Hamsik is everything you'd want in an old school rock and roll Halloween outfit: sick, black, spiked up hair, earings, tattoos and a tongue that can, um, really stick out. Partnering withthe Napoli man is the legend himself, Ronaldinho. The former Barcelona man's permanent goofy smile can perfect any clown or Joker outifit. He also has amazing hair and can be a costume all on his own.

Left Winger: Franck Ribery - Bayern Munich's French winger needs no explanation...

Right Winger: Angel Di Maria - Di Maria is like a human bat covered in tattoos with a tiny head, tiny arms/wings. I'm convinced Di Maria turns into a bat to sleep. Hanging upside down keeps his spiked hair in form so he saves money on gel. Just see for yourself.

Strikers: Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez - Up top we have a Dreamworks star and a classic monster. Wayne Rooney is in fact Shrek come to life. Paint Rooney green and it's startling. A little on the chubby side with those ogre ears and a strong build, he can easily lose his temper, but is also a man of many layers, just like an ogre. Carlos Tevez, the Juventus striker, is undoubtably our team werewolf. Between the scars, smile and the long, shaggy hair he used to sport he's ready to pounce all the time.

The nice thing about this group is they would actually be a damn good team to watch. But hey, if you can't find a costume, get inspired by any of these men and remember looks are deceiving because all of these players are some of the best at their given position. Don't judge, y'all.
