Ukraine Tries To Avoid A Winter Without Gas

After Russia's annexation of Crimea in Ukraine and the Western powers' sanctions on Russia, the conflict seemed to disappear from the news.

On Oct. 17 it surfaced again when the president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, announced the two countries were making progress in reaching a gas deal.
Ukraine has a big problem with winter coming- it's almost entirely dependent on Russia for fuel. Russia shut off the gas to Ukraine in June, citing an overdue bill.

Russia is the primary gas provider for the European Union, which pushed to facilitate the pending Russian-Ukrainian deal. Russia's gas pipelines run through Ukraine to the European Union.
In other news, people are now disappearing from a Russian-controlled Crimea, according to a Human Rights Watch Report.
