A woman was shot to death in South Los Angeles near the Imperial Highway, Sunday evening.

The L.A.P.D. Criminal Gang Homicide unit have asked for any public information on the murder of 29-year-old Samika Griggley.

Official reports say that Griggley was standing along with other bystanders at the intersection of 114th Street and Croesus Avenue at the time of her shooting, Sunday.

She was shot in the back of the head.

At around 9:19 p.m., an unknown vehicle drove by and fired several shots before leaving the scene. A black male also suffered from gunshot wounds, he is now in a stable condition.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to an emergency call from the scene and rushed Griggley to a nearby hospital where she died from her injuries.

An hour before, a separate shooting had occurred just a mile away. A gunman opened fire on one man and two women at the intersection of East 115th Street and Mona Boulevard.

The man was shot in the face, and fragments hit the two women in the hand and the stomach respectively. All three are in stable conditions.

The Criminal Gang Homicide unit have declined to release any further information about the on-going investigation. Similarly, the L.A.F.D. was unable to release any further information due to health privacy laws.

The Grape Elementary School is less than half a mile from the scene of the incident. “It’s scary,” said one teaching assistant (who requested anonymity for fear of safety).

“I used to see her around and we lived near each other. There hadn’t been problems for a while and this was just one guy acting on his own,” she continued. “It’s really scary.”

According to the Los Angeles Times Homicide Report, 13 other homicides - 10 of them gun-related - have occurred in the past year within a mile radius of Griggley’s killing.

The intersection in Watts, which is to the north of Compton, falls within an area ranked ‘high’ for homicide rate.

The police investigation continues.
