It’s almost 4 p.m. on a Sunday, but Grand Central Market is still teeming with life. A family of four sits behind the counter of Eggslut, devouring breakfast sandwiches with gusto; an elderly lady negotiates the price of dried bacalao at Valeria’s; a couple leaves the market, hand in hand, sharing Turkish coffee ice cream from McConnell’s Fine Ice Cream.

Since its opening in 1917, Grand Central Market has become a culinary landmark in the heart of bustling downtown Los Angeles. A cultural melting pot, the market attracts people from all over with its 20-plus vendors. Patrons can now find everything from pour-over coffee and slow-cooked pork to authentic Berlin currywurst and New Mexico pine nuts.

Press Brothers Juicery is the most recent addition to the market. Founded by brothers David and J.D. Jones, the juicery started off as a pop-up booth in a corner of the market, but due to its continuous success, has now moved into a permanent home next to the beloved Eggslut.

Growing up on a farm in Kansas, David and J.D. gained a deep appreciation for the process of growing organic fruits and vegetables. When they moved to Southern California, they brought with them their love of fresh pressed juice, preaching the benefits of organic fruits and sharing juice samples with their friends. After receiving incredible amounts of positive feedback, the two founded their business in 2011 and have expanded the company to include web-based orders and delivery services such as Good Eggs.

The menu includes nine cold pressed juices ($6 for 12 oz., $8 for 16 oz.) divided into three categories: greens, roots and sweets. The ingredients in each juice are written under the name, along with its benefits, which range from immunity booster to cardiovascular support.

Composed of pineapple, apple, lemon and mint, the Liquid Gold is Press Brothers's bestselling juice. With its long list of health benefits, including digestive aid and allergy relief, it is hard to believe the juice still tastes delicious, bursting with fresh flavors of spicy mint and icy lemon. Meanwhile, the Drop Acid from the greens category tastes much rawer, with a mix of cucumber, apple, arugula, lemon, parsley, cilantro, ginger and habanero. It is evident that Press Brothers offers a variety of juices that serve different purposes and cater to various tastes.

In addition to the nine juices, Press Brothers also sells tonics, which are described as wellness shots. The RX tonic ($5) is an anti-inflammatory concoction intended to help with stomach upsets while reducing heart disease risk and blood triglycerides. The SOS tonic ($8), on the other hand, is a liver detoxifier and has been nicknamed by Press Brothers customers as the hangover cure for its refreshing flavor of grapefruit, apple, lemon, garlic, ginger, flaxseed oil and cayenne.

What distinguishes Press Brothers from other California-based juiceries is its organic certification by the United States Department of Agriculture. The U.S.D.A. label guarantees that Press Brothers delivers 100% organic, cold pressed juices of incomparable quality and freshness. Using no sugar or water, Press Brothers products are entirely unprocessed and unpasteurized.

The Press Brothers use juicing as a way to keep healthy in a fast-paced world where most people don’t even come close to getting their daily serving of fruits and vegetables. Despite the steep price tag, juicing is a way to instantly nourish the body with living enzymes, anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals, and can act as a great meal replacement, too. With this in mind, there’s no excuse for you not to pick up a bottle of cold-pressed raw juice from Press Brothers next time you find yourself at Grand Central Market.
