'The Legend Of Korra' Season 4, Episode 1: 'After All These Years'

The much anticipated final season of the hit show "The Legend of Korra" premiered today on October 3, 2014, on Nickelodeon’s website.
The season opened with three years having passed since Korra fought the Red Lotus. In the epic third season finale, Korra was left in a wheel chair after battling one of the most intense physical fight (both inside and outside) in the shows history. The season ended with a shot of Korra crying during the end of the Jinora’s master air bender ceremony where Tenzin stated how the air benders where going to resume the air nation’s mission of bringing peace and tranquility to the world.
Three years has passed since that moment and the Avatar world finds itself in a whole bunch of new mysteries and adventures. The episode opens with a commercialese description of republic city. The major of republic city thanks Asami’s contribution to the advancement of the city’s technology and he announces the coronation of the next Earth King, Prince Wu, to be occurring on that same day.
A lot has changed since the last time we’ve seen team Avatar. Mako is currently working as the Prince’s body guard and he is not too fond of his position as he hopes to return to his position as detective once the Prince is crowned. Because the Prince, like basically all other Earth Kingdom Leaders, is completely terrible and annoying and just not fit for the position. Anyway, Asami and Mako are both excited to see the gang back together (especially the arrival of Korra after so long). The show moves onto a town besieged by bandits as one shop owner gets robbed by three bandits but they are quickly stopped by Opal and Kai, who dawn a cool new air bending outfit that allows them to fly through the air without a glider.
However, when the governor of the town asks about the others who are protecting the town, Opal makes it known that for right now they are all they have, for the air benders are spread out very thin in this new world. We, then, learn what Bolin has been up to. He has definitely changed into a more sophisticated looking character as he now works for the Earth Kingdom under Kuvira’s rule. When their train is under attack, Kuvira goes out and handles the situation and takes down a group of bandits with some new metal bending techniques. After their capture, Kuvira binds their hands to the train tracks and gives them the option of either pledging their allegiance to her or hope that someone will save them before the next train. They all pledge allegiance to her and acknowledge her as the “Great Uniter.” This immediately tells the viewers who our new villain is and the amount of power she currently has. Kuvira’s train stops by the city Kai and Opal are protecting; after the reunion hugs, the new season grudges flare out as it appears that Bolin is also teamed with Opal’s brother.
Apparently, her brother betrayed her mother three years ago and left Zaofu and is now engaged to Kuvira. Kuvira speaks to the governor of the city to reiterate her “generous offer” of him signing his state over to her and declaring his allegiance if he wants his city to be protected. The governor refuses to let her conquer his city like she has done to many others. Kuvira warns him that without their help his people shall perish. Kuvira, then, announces their departure to the rest of her team and states that if the governor does not agree to the promise then they will leave in one day. Opal is not too fond of Bolin working for Kuvira and leaving the city to be destroyed, and she is also greatly affected by how much Bolin has changed since he started working for Kuvira. She and Kai attempt to save the city on their own but are ambushed in the skies as they attempted to bring food to the city. The governor had no choice but to sign over his city and pledge his loyalty.

We then find ourselves back in Republic city as everyone is anticipating Korra’s arrival. Mako, however, is hit with bad news as he is now going to be working for the Prince full time due to the Prince feeling that he does not know how he can live without Mako after Mako saved him from getting hit with pies earlier in the show.
Finally, it is announced that a Southern Water tribe ship has pulled into the docks. However, when they ask Tonraq where is Korra, he is caught off-guard by the question, for Korra left the Southern Water tribe six months prior. We then see what really happened to Korra. She is found fighting in a Earth bending cage match with a whole new look. She ditched the water tribe clothes for that of the earth kingdom along with a short bob cut.
Viewers quickly see she is not the powerful confident bender she has always been as she is quickly defeated by her opponent and is paid little for her poor performance. When she is told that she looks like the Avatar, she gives a dismal response as she apparently has denounced her Avatar title and no longer owns up to her name.
