The Drums are on the road again and ready to blow their fans away with their evolving sound.

Moments before their lively performance of 21 both new and original tunes at the Mayan Theatre, the Brooklyn-based duo Jonny Pierce and Jacob Graham took a moment to speak to Neon Tommy about the mechanics behind their new album, “Encylopedia.”

“We didn’t tell anyone we were making it and that gave us a sense of freedom,” said Graham. “Just not having anyone else telling you ‘Oh maybe you shouldn’t do that’ or whatever so I think this record is a lot more playful and adventurous.”

Since the release of their first album, the Drums had undergone highs and downs with the loss of band members and record labels. As a result, Pierce said they purposefully disappeared from the scene to examine themselves and the band to figure out how to truly represent their music.

The duo said they didn’t want to release just another breezy record. Instead, they took the initiative to write songs that stepped away from the Drum utopia and more towards the greater world.

“The song 'Let Me' was directly inspired by all of the violence toward all of the LGBT people in Russia in the past couple of years,” said Graham. “It’s meant to be a song of encouragement or at the very least comfort.”

Since the release of the “Encyclopedia,” the band has been receiving positive feedback.

“We’ve been getting a lot of messages from kids saying 'I was really shocked by the record at first but I can’t stop listening to it,'” said Pierce. “It’s a 'grower' kind of thing and that’s the greatest compliment to us because that’s our favorite kind of music.”
