Tom Menino, Boston's longest-serving mayor and one of its most beloved, died from cancer on Thursday at the age of 71. Menino was elected to office in 1993 and won re-election four more times before his health prevented him, reluctantly, from running for another term, according to The Guardian. His work in office ended, at least temporarily, a decades-long legacy of Irish domination of city politics.

After announcing in 2013 that he would not run again for office, the bombings at the Boston Marathon occurred. Though his health was in decline, he continued to be a leader for the people of Boston. Menino is survived by his wife, two children, and six grandchildren.
