British alternative group alt-J (∆) rocked the Greek Theatre, with opening group The Acid, to a full house of hip music lovers.

On the fifth leg of their “This Is All Yours” tour for their sophomore album of the same name, the group engaged an energetic audience in a night full of great, textural music. The artistry of this group was conveyed in their impressive set. Listening to them live made their music more multi-dimensional and tangible — almost as if the tracks didn’t do them enough justice.

With the members clad in black and the vibrant lights illuminating their figures from behind, the stage carried an air of mystery to match the music. The production was great and the lights only enhanced, not covered, the musical experience.

During the band's performance of "Tessellate," the white light seemed to ripple behind, creating a hazy, dream-like effect. Alongside the lights, lead singer Joe Newman's voice resonated throughout the crowd, with a cool, eerie overtone layered with the warm textual sounds of instrumental and vocal harmony.

Newman’s vocals translate surprisingly well in real life. One would think that with a voice so high-pitched and distinctive as his, it would only perform well in the studio. I was happily proven wrong. With Newman’s voice and Gus Unger-Hamilton’s harmonizing, backed with the various, unique instruments used throughout each song, alt-J’s music left a presence throughout the theatre.

The subtleties in the tracks, which often go unnoticed or under-appreciated, are definitely enhanced during their live performance. The harmony between all the members, both in music and teamwork, was so evident in their flawless performance.

There couldn’t have been a better venue for alt-J than the Greek Theatre. The intimate setting and the location within Griffith Park makes it an ideal venue for a band like alt-J. The experience of enjoying subliminal music like alt-J’s in nature is surreal. The ringing of the bells and the beats of the synthesizer lingered throughout the crowd, as Newman’s voice echoed into the woods.

In order to experience a musical nirvana, go see alt-J live. It will change (∆) your standards in music.
