Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison on conspiracy charges for acting as al Qaeda’s spokesman after the attacks on September 11, 2001.

Abu Ghaith, who testified in court that his role was driven by his religious beliefs, was the highest level al Qaeda leader to be placed on trial in the United States since the 2001 attacks.

He became the voice of al Qaeda in the recruitment videos circulated after the attacks, which were used to recruit followers for suicide missions.

With the help of Turkey’s national intelligence service, the CIA tracked Abu Ghaith to a luxury hotel in Ankara, Turkey, where they were able to arrest him.
