Last night, the British boy band, One Direction, capped off their three-night domination of the iconic Rose Bowl in Pasadena. I was lucky enough to attend and I have to say, this concert was legendary. Why? I, Nicole, a self-proclaimed obsessive fan of One Direction, will tell you.

Last night was not only a concert, it was a birthday celebration. Niall Horan, the blonde-Irish member, was celebrating his 21st birthday with his four band mates and 60,000 screaming fans. He showed up on stage with balloons tied to his guitar strap in the colors of the Irish flag plus a special 21st birthday balloon. The crowd went crazy and as the concert went on, the rest of the boys continually mentioned how happy they were to be celebrating Niall’s birthday at such a historic venue. Harry Styles even led the whole crowd in singing the happy birthday song as the birthday boy attempted an Irish jig. Niall was extremely happy the whole night, saying to the crowd, “First of all, to play here in this- one of the most famous stadiums in the world, and, uh, not only that but to do it on your 21st birthday when you become legal in this country, pretty cool.” The crowd screamed especially loud for Niall the whole night.

Harry Styles is not human. While each of the five boys have many quirks on stage, Harry is known to be a very passionate performer. He proves this every show with a very strange bit during the song, “Better Than Words.”

It’s a good thing we’re all “Fireproof” since it was so hot last night. The temperature in the stadium must have been at least 80 degrees. Luckily, this didn't stop the boys from teasing the crowd with lines from their latest song, "Fireproof." The five boys recently released this song as a free download for 24 hours and it’s from their upcoming album, entitled “Four” to be released in November. However, it was announced today that “Fireproof” would not be their debut single from their next album. Instead, they will be releasing their new single called "Steal My Girl" on September 29. (Listen to "Fireproof" here.)

Zayn Malik’s vocals are a gift to all. He may not be the first name one associates with the band, but Zayn Malik, the dark-haired one, is an absolute gift. He is often the one to deliver the best riffs, high notes, and solos. When he sings, the crowd becomes slightly quieter because the fans know that Zayn’s notes are gifts from God himself.

Louis Tomlinson looked so pretty. He literally glows like an angel and his voice has a raspy quality to it that softens even the hardest hearts. Plus, not only is he attractive to look at, he is the most involved in the songwriting process along with Liam Payne. He helped write two of the band’s most beloved songs which were performed last night: “Strong” and “Better Than Words.”

The band behind the boy band is so good. The Brits and lone Irishman are backed by an incredible band. Jon Shone (the keyboard player), Dan Richards (the guitar player), Sandy Beales (the bass player), and Josh Devine (the drummer) have been touring with the boy band for the past few years. They get a chance to shine in the show when Harry introduces each of them. They musicians play the beginning seconds of random songs and sometimes the boys will join in and sing. Last night, the crowd was treated when Jon Shone, the keyboard player, played the introduction of “I Want.” This song was on the band’s first album and it was their encore song during their first tour in 2011 and 2012. Harry began singing his opening verse to the delight of thousands and the whole group joined in on the chorus as the crowd went wild.

(Personally, that song was my favorite from the first album… So, you know, I maybe went a little crazy and maybe screamed so loud I drew blood?)

One Direction’s success has still not reached its peak. These boys aren’t going anywhere and neither are their fans. Throughout the night, all five of them continually thanked those in attendance and expressed how incredible it felt for them to be in their position all due to their wonderful fans. After this tour wraps up in three weeks, the band will begin promoting their new single, new album, and preparing for their next tour, On The Road Again, which kicks off in Australia early next year.
