Obesity Epidemic: Americans Continue Getting Fatter

Obesity has been rising rapidly for the past decade and it shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. About 46 percent of U.S. adults were obese in 2000. According to a government study, that number has risen to a whopping 54 percent this past year.

These extra inches around the waistline concerns Dr. William Dietz, an obesity expert at George Washington University. He said, “The increase s a concern. There’s no question about that. What it suggests is that even though the obesity rate may be stable, fat distribution may be changing, which would mean that we shouldn’t be complacent about the plateau.”
