‘The Mindy Project’ Season 3 Premiere Recap

If you missed the episode, here’s what you need to know:
Danny & Mindy
Right off the bat, Danny admitted that if he had been told five years ago that he would eventually date Mindy, he would’ve said: “Oh, is everyone else on the planet dead?”
But, now? Danny and Mindy couldn’t be happier in their new relationship. In an opening montage that recaps their tumultuous love story and showcases their newfound bliss, Mindy admits that they’ve had to move out of their comfort zones (Mindy tries healthy food, Danny tries Mindy’s clothing suggestions – both to no avail), but after years of waiting, they’re a couple now, fans.
However, the bliss is cut short when Danny finds out that Mindy has been telling the whole office that he’s “good with his mouth,” brought to his attention by a guidance-seeking Peter. Danny tells Mindy that she has to learn to keep things to herself, which, as fans know, won’t be easy for her.
Shulman & Associates gets charitable
In a Shulman & Associates staff meeting, Jeremy tells everyone that they need to become more charitable, to which Mindy disagrees because she is “mad charitable,” citing the time she donated 2 cans of soup to get into a Katy Perry Q&A as an example. With the help of Peter’s girlfriend Lauren, Jeremy introduces the office’s new charity, Doctors Without Molars, for which the office holds an event later in the episode.
Morgan & Lou
Not only are fans reunited with the hilarious and inappropriate oddball that is Morgan Tookers, but they are also introduced to his equally entertaining cousin Lou (Rob McElhenney, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”), with whom Morgan went to jail after they stole a bunch of cars.
Later in the episode, Morgan and Lou go over to Danny’s, where they find him playing “Let it Go” on the piano, to talk to him about his fight with Mindy. In telling Danny that the truth will set him free, Lou frees himself by revealing that he was the reason Morgan went to jail because he turned him in when he got lonely in jail. But, Morgan, as unpredictable as ever, quickly forgave him because the two are best friends. Here’s hoping these two best friends stick together because Lou is a great addition to the cast.
Peter, Lauren & Jeremy
While Peter is busy asking Danny for relationship advice, Lauren and Jeremy get close while planning their charity event. Danny sees Jeremy massaging Lauren’s shoulders, assumes that Lauren is cheating on Peter, and makes the mistake of telling Mindy, who tells the entire office. Lou mistakenly tells Peter about Lauren and Jeremy at the charity event – because he had no idea who Peter was – and Peter confronts Lauren, who tells him that she only kissed Jeremy.
Peter immediately goes up to Jeremy and punches him in the face (making the name of their charity suddenly very appropriate). After continuing their fight outside, Jeremy tells Peter that he wants to date Lauren, which confuses Peter because he always thought Jeremy was gay. Apparently, Jeremy and his dad (Alan Dale) have “a very unreadable chemistry.”
Danny’s Secret
Saving the best for last, Danny revealed a pretty big secret during the episode. When Mindy finds a pink thong with “Diamond” written on it in rhinestones – and gets zero answers from a defensive Danny – she becomes obsessed with finding the owner. After Peter tells her that it’s a stripper thong (because “it snaps”), and Morgan tells her it’s a male thong (because it has a pocket in the front), the truth comes out after a quick Google search: Danny used to be a male stripper who went by the name “Diamond Dan.”
Mindy immediately confronts Danny about this revelation. He reveals that he worked as a stripper to pay for medical school and he didn’t tell her because he doesn’t trust her with his secrets. After the aforementioned pep talk from Morgan and Lou, Danny finds Mindy on her fire escape – with a knife in hand to ward off murderers, per usual – and tells her that he does trust her. He reveals that in addition to his stripping paying for medical school, the savings helped him pay off his mother’s mortgage. He also divulges that his middle name is Allen, after his dad, and when his mother couldn’t afford a backpack for him in elementary school, he carried a purse to school.
The two share a sweet moment after Mindy reveals that the reason she tells everyone about their relationship is because she wants it to feel as real as possible, so the possibility of it all being taking away feels less likely. Danny reassures her that what they have is real.
The episode ends with what is perhaps a series high, at least for Danny, as he strips to "American Woman" for Mindy, proving that he is worthy of a hot pink thong and the name "Diamond Dan."
