Effective immediately, The Los Angeles Register will be ceasing publication of its print newspaper, according to a memo sent by co-owner Aaron Kushner on Monday night.

Kushner said the 5-month-old paper is closing so that the company he co-owns with Eric Spitz, Freedom Communications, can focus on its markets in Orange County, Riverside, and San Bernardino County.

In anticipation of criticism from competitors, Kushner said, “We believe the true definition of failure is not taking bold steps toward growth.”

The announcement to employees came with hints of staff changes on the horizon, but no official details have been released.

Public reaction to the news of the closure has varied from snarky and cynical to upset and even angry at the way Freedom Communications is handling the issue.
