In Obama's address to the nation on America's campaign against the Islamic State, also referred to as ISIS or ISIL, one threat was left unmentioned—Twitter.

Twitter, one of the world's social media giants, is investigating threats made to their employees by a user purportedly linked to the terrorist group, according to reports.

The posts calling for the assassination of Twitter employees were made under the handle @dawlamoon, an account that claims to represent Al Nusra Al Maqdisia—or The Supporters of Jerusalem—a Jerusalem-based affiliate of ISIL, according to Vocativ

In response to a series of ISIL-related accounts being blocked by the social network, the user reportedly threatened to "bring the war to them in the real world on the ground." The account has since been suspended.

The Tweets, originally posted in Arabic and translated by Vocativ, which can be seen here, called for the mobilization of what was called "lone wolves" across Europe and America, using the hashtag "#The_Concept_Of_Lone_Wolf_Attacks."

One post read: "the time has arrived to respond to Twitter’s management by directly attacking their employees and physically assassinating them."

“Every Twitter employee in San Francisco in the United States should bear in mind and watch over himself because on his doorstep there might be a lone wolf assassin waiting,” read another, the Washington Post reported.

The San Francisco-based tech company, which has bureaus around the world, has declined to disclose whether increased security measures have been taken in response to the threats.

"Our security team is investigating the veracity of these threats with relevant law enforcement officials," Twitter said in a statement.

The news come on the heels of other reported ISIL threats in the country. Last week, a man in Chicago was arrested for making a bomb threat and waving a flag with the group's name reportedly inscribed. Weeks before, federal authorities were called in to allay fears when an online story falsely claimed a mall in Charlotte, North Carolina was under threat of the group.

Last month, another Twitter user garnered headlines after posting: "#AmessagefromISIStoUS We are in your state/ We are in your cities/ We are in your streets. You are our goals anywhere.” The account was later suspended.

For now, it is unclear whether the cyber war between Twitter and ISIL and its affiliates will keep pace. “Some commentators have been arguing that part of ISIL’s strength has been its ability to use social media to get its message out, and that ISIL extremists are far more media savvy than their opponents,” Terry McCarthy, President of the Los Angeles World Affairs Council, said in an email.

But the group’s social media strategy may backfire, said McCarthy.

“By beheading two journalists and putting the tapes online, and then threatening to attack employees of Twitter, they are showing that they are simply a radical, violent group," he said. "This threat to Twitter will rebound against them, particularly amongst a younger demographic to whom they are trying to appeal in the first place.”
