The House of Representatives voted to authorize the training and arming of Syrian rebels to fight the Islamic State.

The 273-to-165 vote backs President Obama, who personally asked for their support, says The New York Times.

Speaker John A. Boehner and Representative Nancy Pelosi, the minority leader, both strongly backed the legislation.

The Senate hopes to pass the measure as early as Thursday.
