After another week in the books, let's take a closer look at the top five Heisman Trophy candidates heading into Week 5 of the college football season.

1. Marcus Mariota, Quarterback, Junior, University of Oregon

1,135 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, 0 interceptions, 74 completion percentage, 214 rushing yards, 3 touchdowns

Mariota was surgical in Saturday’s 38-31 dogfight against Washington State. The Heisman Trophy frontrunner finished the game with more touchdowns than incompletions, completing 21 of 25 passes for 329 yards and five touchdowns, despite being sacked seven times behind a depleted offensive line. It will be difficult for any player to overtake Mariota this season as he continues to keep up his torrid pace.

2. Amari Cooper, Wide Receiver, Junior, University of Alabama

43 receptions, 655 receiving yards, 5 touchdowns

Cooper put on a show in Saturday’s offensive obliteration against a Florida Gators squad featuring elite cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III. Arguably the best player in the country, Cooper flashed his ability to lineup all over the field in Lane Kiffin’s aerial attack. On pace to shatter the SEC single-season receiving record, Cooper will have a bevy of primetime games to prove his worth as the top player in college football.

3. Kenny Hill, Quarterback, Sophomore, Texas A&M University

1,359 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, 1 interception, 70 completion percentage

Hill had another solid outing on Saturday against the SMU Mustangs despite throwing his first interception of the season. The signal caller is ranked in the top 10 nationally in passing yards, touchdown passes and passing efficiency. Hill is thriving in Kevin Sumlin’s high-octane offense and is torching defenses week in and week out.

4. Todd Gurley, Running Back, Junior, University of Georgia

41 rushing attempts, 402 rushing yards, 4 touchdowns

Gurley made the most of his six carries in Saturday’s 66-0 thrashing over Troy, accumulating 73 yards on the ground while average a healthy 12.2 yards per carry. It is puzzling that Gurley did not receive more work in Georgia’s crowded backfield, but his 9.8 yards per carry average is the best in the nation for any player with more than 40 carries this season. The 226-pound running back will look to have a bigger impact in Saturday’s SEC clash against Tennessee.

5. Melvin Gordon, Running Back, Junior, University of Wisconsin

46 carries, 431 yards, 6 touchdowns

Gordon exploded onto the Heisman scene on Saturday against Bowling Green. The tailback’s historic day concluded with 253 rushing yards on 13 carries and five touchdowns. Gordon was already a household name among college football fans after finishing his sophomore year with over 1,600 rushing yards. His 8.26 career-rushing yard per carry average is now tied for most in college football history. Gordon will look to feast on Big 10 defenses this season and secure his spot among the greatest running backs in college football history.
