The severe flash floods caused by monsoon in the Pakistani and Indian border have perished more than 400 lives on Tuesday. In Kashimir alone, the floods triggered landslides and killed more than 231 people.

According to Pakistani authorities, the country is experiencing the worst downpour since 2010 that killed up to 1,700 people.  As the water submerged houses and bridges, authorities speculate that the death toll is still on the rise, and could affect more than 1.5 million people.

Khwaja Mohammad Asif, Pakistan’s minister for water and power, told the parliament that warnings were given to 700,000 people in the region to prepare for evacuation.

Both Pakistani and Indian troops have been deployed via helicopters and boats to the affected regions in order to support the rescue operations.

Environmental advocacy group based in India blamed the deforestation on the hills of Himalaya for causing the soil erosion that triggered the floods.
