Earlier this year, Dinesh D’Souza, a conservative author and documentary filmmaker, pled guilty to violating federal campaign finance laws. He incentivized an employee and a woman he was romantically involved with to donate $20,000 total to the campaign of Wendy E. Long, who was a close friend from Dartmouth College.

After D’Souza pled guilty, Judge Richard M. Berman of Federal District Court in Manhattan said that he could face up to two years in prison.

D’Souza’s lawyers asked for leniency stating that D’Souza is a notable scholar, community member and family member who “unequivocally accepted responsibility” for the campaign finance violations.

Instead of giving him a prison sentence, Judge Berman assigned D’Souza a probationary sentence, which includes eight months in a community confinement center and a $30,000 fine.
