Student Athletes To Profit In Ruling Against NCAA

On Friday the landmark Ed O’Bannon antitrust case came to a close when federal Judge Claudia Wilken ruled against the NCAA's monopoly over profits from student athletics. 

UCLA basketball star Ed O’Bannon raised the case on behalf of all Division I men's basketball and football players, arguing against NCAA's policy that had prevented students from selling their names, images and likenesses.

"The Court finds that the challenged NCAA rules unreasonably restrain trade in the market for certain educational and athletic opportunities offered by NCAA Division I schools," wrote Wilken in her 99-page ruling. 

While thousands of dollars that had previously been going to the NCAA will now be going to student athletes, Wilken said that the NCAA could set a cap for the amount of money paid to students.
