Meryl Streep: Queen of Hollywood, mother of drama, winner of 28 Golden Globes; whatever you may associate her with, Meryl Streep is considered one of the greatest actresses in history to grace the big screens. Recently, she took up the role of Chief Elder in “The Giver,” which has surprised audiences all around for this casting decision. Moreover, people were surprised at Streep’s acceptance of the role in a big-named film.

People may argue that Meryl Streep is ‘too good’ to take on popular fiction. False. Because Streep is so talented, she is able to digest a crucial role in a major blockbuster, such as “The Giver.” Because this is a book-to-film adaptation with a very age-inclusive fan base, the anticipation and hype over this movie has been immense, and an iconic actress like Meryl Streep would be able to fulfill such a dynamic role.

“The Giver” is a refreshing genre and style for Streep, as well as a chance for her to reestablish to audiences all around her versatile method acting styles and superb skill in the talent.

That being said, however important the role of Chief Elder, Meryl Streep’s role in the novel is relatively small compared to that of the main protagonist of the film. But since it is a film adaptation, producers could have easily altered the size of her role to better suit her on-screen persona as a major presence within a film. However, due the the film’s ensemble cast consisting of big-named actors such as Streep herself, Jeff Bridges, Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgård, and even teen-pop sensation Taylor Swift, it would be very difficult to provide each actor the on-screen time expected by fans. Also, all the famous names may overshadow the role of Jonas, played by Brenton Thwaites.

Streep’s fluent and natural acting will definitely help rake in views and major profits, but it won’t guarantee the film amazing reviews. Like previous adaptations with huge fan bases such as the Twilight series, and potentially the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey, book fans may be disappointed in the quality of the film.

Meryl Streep can do no wrong, and taking up “The Giver” is a great career move by making her a more relevant actress to people of a younger demographic. Hopefully the film can live up to the audience’s standards of a Meryl Streep worthy motion picture.
