USC’s fifth-year cornerback Josh Shaw has admitted that his heroic story about saving his nephew from drowning was a “complete fabrication” on Wednesday. According to USC Athletics, Shaw has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities.

“[Trojans] are extremely disappointed in Josh,” said USC coach Steven Sarkisian, “he let us all down.”

“I appreciate that Josh has now admitted that he lied and has apologized. Although this type of behavior is out of character for Josh, it is unacceptable,” he added.

Josh Shaw reportedly jumped off of a two-story balcony on Saturday night to save his drowning nephew from a swimming pool, which caused him to suffer from two high ankle sprains. The validity of his tale has been called into question every since the story broke on USC Athletics website Monday.

The school noted that Shaw has retained legal counsel.
