The Trojans’ secondary was hit with a massive setback Monday afternoon when it was announced that cornerback Josh Shaw suffered leg injuries over the weekend.

USC’s starting CB and recently named captain jumped off a high balcony while at a family gathering in an attempt to save his seven-year-old nephew from drowning, according to a report on the USC Athletics website. Despite the fall, Shaw saved his nephew Carter, and dragged him out of the pool while in significant pain. Shaw has been diagnosed with two high-ankle sprains and is expected to miss significant time.

Shaw released a statement today, saying, “I would do it again for whatever kid it was, it did not have to be my nephew. My ankles really hurt, but I am lucky to be surrounded by the best trainers and doctors in the world. I am taking my rehab one day at a time, and I hope to be back on the field as soon as possible."

Coach Steve Sarkisian also expressed his admiration for Shaw’s bravery: "That was a heroic act by Josh, putting his personal safety aside. But that's the kind of person he is. It is unfortunate that he'll be sidelined for a while and we will miss his leadership and play, but I know he'll be working hard to get back on the field as soon as possible."

The senior ex-Florida transfer had four picks and posted 67 tackles, including 5.5 for loss, last season. He was expected to anchor a secondary lacking in depth and experience. It is likely that one of two freshmen, nickel back Chris Hawkins or dual-threat five-star recruit Adoree' Jackson, will take the leader’s place against Fresno State this Saturday.
