At least 82 people were shot, 14 fatally, in Chicago over Fourth of July weekend. This represents an unusually bloody episode even for a city that suffers from high crime rates (via Slate).

In 2012, Chicago was the only city with more than 500 recorded homicides, rivaling even New York City’s homicide count. The number of shooting deaths has decreased this year, but the number of overall incidents was on the rise even before this weekend.

The Chicago Tribune has called it “the greatest burst of gun violence Chicago has seen this year.”
