Iraqi possession of chemical weapons has long been a source of anxiety for American politicians, but now it’s not the federal government, but the Islamic State of Syria extremist group (ISIS) that the United States should fear.

ISIS recently took control over a  former chemical weapons facility near Baghdad, where remnants of 2,500 chemical rockets formerly filled with sarin, along with other chemical weapons, are currently housed.

A letter made public by the United Nations on Tuesday claims that ISIS captured the facility in Muthanna on June 11.

“Whatever material was kept there is pretty old and not likely to be able to be accessed or used against anyone right now,” said U.S. Defense Department spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby, downplaying any real threat posed by the decades-old weapons.
