While the public is still reeling from the Bergdahl prisoner swap, the National Security Council (NSC) recently announced its intention to remove even more prisoners from Guantanamo Bay.

“While we do not generally discuss transfers before they take place, we are fully committed to implementing the president’s direction that we transfer detainees to the greatest extent possible, consistent with national security and our humane-treatment policy, as we work toward closing the facility at Guantanamo Bay,” said NSC spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden on Tuesday.

While President Obama has faced a great deal of backlash for failing to make good on his 2008 promise to close Guantanamo Bay, criticism is sure to follow his recent attempts to fulfill the promise as well.

Since United States currently bans the transfer of Guantanamo into the U.S., complex international negotiations with countries like Afghanistan, Algeria and Saudi Arabia are bound to ensue in the coming months.

"Until President Obama convinces the public that this swap was in our interests, all further transfers should be off the table," Rep. Ted Cruz said, setting the tone for similar criticisms of the Obama administration that may begin to appear with increasing fervor from disapproving members of the GOP.
