Uber is garnering support from its customers on social media to oppose two bills that could potentially toughen regulations for the popular ride-sharing service and its competitors. The bills, AB 612 and AB 2293, call for increased safety measures and stricter insurance requirements for ride-sharing companies and are slated for discussion in the State Senate on Tuesday.

The proposed bills push ride-sharing companies to provide 24/7 commercial insurance coverage, just like taxicabs. The legislation will also require the companies' insurance policy to be the primary insurance policy for drivers. Current regulations require that the companies' $1 million insurance policy for its drivers kick in only after the driver's personal insurance has reached its limit.

The bills also enforce rules for safety inspections of cars and criminal background checks on drivers, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Uber condemns both the bills on its blog, calling AB 612, "a flagrant attempt to stymie innovation" and AB 2293, "a back-room deal by insurance companies and trial attorneys." The post also urges customers to tweet, mail or call senators to oppose the bills.

Taxicab drivers and three Los Angeles City Council members support the bill, according to the Los Angeles Times. 

"We cannot tolerate an industry that's unregulated, unsafe and unacceptable," said Councilman Gil Cedillo.
